In 2006, a New York couple purchased a contemporary second home with great bones and incredible grounds. Nicole's interior renovation began with the kitchen.
The kitchen was too small, both for the size of their home and for their love of entertaining. The goal was to create a space that focused on layout, appearance and just enough open wall space for their growing art collection. Nicole selected maple wood for the cabinets to add warmth and continuity from the kitchen into the open dining area. She used a light granite to further brighten the counter space and give ease of use in this beach home. In lieu of wrapping the granite around to the breakfast bar, she designed a floating counter unit made of walnut. To visually enlarge the feel of the room, most of the appliances were encased in wood, and the top cabinets were paned with glass.
The continuity of materials, combined with the light color palette, visually transformed this relatively small floor plan into a seemingly larger kitchen.
